Bongs and oil rigs are an effective way to assimilate your material with the help of water filtration. It produces cooler and cleaner smoke which also contributes to better taste. There are several different models with different filtration and cooling systems called percolators. In this post, we go through the benefits of the different percolators in this series. Perhaps you have seen that some bongs only consist of a pipe and a vase, while others in the vase contain several glass parts in different designs and colors that, in addition to their practical function, also contribute to the stylistic expression.
A bong and oil rig can easily replace each other by changing the cup. Put an herb cup on an oil rig- BOOM- you have a bong. Put a quartz banger on a bong- BAM- you have an oil rig. What sets the cups apart is primarily the material and design. With herb cups, you light a fire above the cup to burn the herbs, the smoke is then sucked down through a small hole in the bottom of the cup and into the bong. For herb cups, we recommend that you use a screen at the bottom to save on cleaning, but also prevent residues from the cup from being carried up with the hit and into the mouth. We've all been there… A quartz banger is a cup made of tempered glass that can withstand high temperatures. Why it is especially important on bangers, in contrast to an herb cup, you instead hold the fire from below directly towards the bottom of the cup with storm lighters to melt your wax or oil so that smoke is formed and goes down into the oil rig through a small tube attached to the side of the cup.
Can you use storm lighters for herbal cups? You absolutely can, but you should be a little careful and not fire too hard. For those who want to avoid the taste and inhaling gas, you can fire with ordinary hemp wicks for the best experience.
Many people wonder what size they should choose for screens. In this particular series, we recommend 15-17 mm screens and it is a relatively universally suitable size. If a screen is a little too big, you can always cup it a little by pressing with, for example, a pen or packing tool so that the edges lie against the edges of the cup, which also prevents the screen from sliding around when filling or emptying the cup. But they are also soft and easy to cut with a scissor for a perfect fit if desired. There are also ready-made bowled screens (as ST Brass Screens 15mm), with brass edges and longer durability. Larger screens should be chosen for bongs with chillums, i.e. pipe and cup built into each other. The holes in the bottom of chillums cups are often larger than on regular herb cups, so you want to go up to at least 17 - preferably 20 mm screen to prevent the material from going down into the bong and disappointing everyone involved. We recommend ST Steel Screens 17mm and ST Steel Screens 20mm.

First up we have Tree percs - Tree percolators, designed as a tree with a main trunk and several smaller tubes or "branches". The smoke goes up through the main trunk and spreads through the branches into the water, creating a bunch of smaller bubbles. It is this distribution of the smoke that provides softer hits and effective cooling. Ijolite comes with three full tiers of tree percolators and is an excellent choice for those with more sensitive throats and lungs. The super filtration provides smooth smoke and minimizes the risk of coughing.
Tree percolators can be a bit of a scourge to clean as the placement of the small pipes is often in such a way that it is difficult to access to scrub properly and you therefore want to choose a durable and high-quality glass one. The best way to clean is with an isopropanol bath and let the bong stand for a few hours before rinsing. You can also add salt. Then let the bong dry up properly before the next use.
Disc perc - Disc percolator, is a circular, horizontal perculator that is welded into the body of the bong, either with several small holes or slots that provide good pressure and create a lot of bubbles that filter the smoke. They are usually easier to clean than other percolators, however, the small holes in the disk can become clogged so you have to clean more often for the best flow. Disc percolators are very similar to honeycomb percolators, with the difference being that the honeycombs are a separate piece and not welded into the bong body.
Our disc-perc bongs and oil rigs are also equipped with built-in cooling oil. Put it in the freezer for a while before use for even cooler hits!
Circ perc - Circular percolator is similar to the disc percolator, with slots on the outside of the ring. The smoke is drawn through the slots and into a diffusion chamber before it travels up to the mouthpiece. A circular percolator can consist of one or more rings and is varied in design and style. Our Andesite bubbler is equipped with circular percolators with decorative glass flowers.
Ufo perc- Ufo percolator, is a downstem placed upwards in a glass bubble with slits in the lower part. The flared shape provides efficient diffusion and produces very smooth smoke that relieves any cough. This type of percolator is also popular for its efficiency and airflow, as well as being easy to clean compared to many other varieties.
You can also add additional filtration with a precooler. We have precoolers with a wide range of different percolator systems that you can add, for example, to a bong with just an ice stop, or if you want real thunder filtration on the percolator bong!
